Sozi Pedro Tulante focuses his practice on trial work and complex litigation, including matters involving product liability and mass torts. As the former top lawyer for the City of Philadelphia and a federal prosecutor, Mr. Tulante draws on his experience in federal and state courts to advocate for clients in industries including medical device, pharmaceutical and health-care industries in high-stakes lawsuits and investigations.
From 2016 to 2018, Mr. Tulante served as Philadelphia’s City Solicitor. In that role, he was the city’s general counsel and responsible for the city’s litigation, transactions and all other legal work and managed the 220 lawyers of the Philadelphia Law Department. During his tenure, he created the department's affirmative litigation practice, which handled notable cases in Philadelphia across industries including banking, commerce and food and beverage.
Before his appointment as City Solicitor, Mr. Tulante spent five years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Philadelphia, where he led investigations and prosecutions of narcotics and white collar offenses and tried jury cases on behalf of the government. Mr. Tulante rejoined Dechert after serving as general counsel of an energy-storage company, leading its legal team and providing strategic counsel to its C-suite.
Mr. Tulante's legal work has been widely recognized. He was named one of the “Most Influential Black Lawyers” by Savoy Magazine and recently as "Best of Bar" by the Philadelphia Business Journal. Mr. Tulante has also handled high-profile pro-bono matters, including a year-long investigation for the City of Philadelphia to uncover the remains of the victims of the MOVE bombing.
Mr. Tulante sits on the board of directors for the Wistar Institute and the American Inn of Court at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and is a member of the American Law Institute. He is also a longtime member of the adjunct faculty at the University of Pennsylvania Carey School of Law.
