Ethan Fogel Awarded the 2019 Citizens Bank Achievement Award from the Philadelphia Bar Association

Dechert LLP partner Ethan Fogel has been awarded the 2019 Citizens Bank Achievement Award from the Philadelphia Bar Association. The award honors an outstanding individual with significant accomplishments in improving the administration of justice and distinguished service in voluntary activities.

Mr. Fogel is a partner in Dechert’s bankruptcy and restructuring group. He also chairs the Pro Bono Committee in Dechert’s Philadelphia office. He has been a critical leader and dedicated hands-on worker both in setting up and participating in a pro bono system to provide representation to tenants facing eviction, and in moving beyond that with advocacy to establish a right to counsel in Philadelphia for all low income tenants.

More uniquely, Ethan’s pro bono work with the Stout research firm to develop a powerful report documenting the return on investment of providing legal aid to Philadelphia’s tenants has had national impact; the report is now used across the country to convince local policy makers that providing representation is not just the just thing to do, but also the economically sound approach. 

Mr. Fogel is a member of the Landlord Tenant Liaison Committee, established by the Court of Common Pleas to improve the administration of landlord/tenant cases, which was recognized with the 2007 First Judicial District of Pennsylvania Pro Bono Publico Award for its work. He is a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Civil Gideon Task Force and has co-chaired its Housing Working Group. He is active in addressing systemic issues relating to landlord tenant practice and mentoring volunteers who have taken on eviction defense matters.

Mr. Fogel was honored at the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Quarterly Luncheon in Philadelphia on December 12.
