The Biden administration issued a landmark executive order that is intended to ensure that America leads the way in realizing the promise and managing the risks of artificial intelligence. The executive order articulates new standards for AI safety and security, while at the same time attempting to promote innovation and competition to advance American leadership on AI matters.

The executive order builds on previous actions the Biden administration has taken, including work that led to voluntary commitments from 15 leading companies to drive toward safe, secure, and trustworthy development of AI, and comes in the same week the UK government hosted a global summit on AI safety at historic Bletchley Park, with international governments, leading AI companies and research experts coming together to address safety in the development and use of frontier AI technology.
